7. Deer Valley Housing

So most of you are probably gonna stay in one of the housings provided by Deer Valley... let's check them out a little bit.

River's Edge, Heber City, UT

This place is awesome to stay in terms of facilities - amenities. Why? Because this housing are cabins where you may have 3 roommates. Please, remember it's going to be winter when you get there, so don't think it's going to be as nice as it looks in the picture haha.

Each cabin has:

- 2 bedrooms with 2 beds each (the biggest room has 2 single beds, a terrace and an armoire; the smallest has a bunk bed with no terrace, but a closet haha).

- 2 bathrooms (the smallest bedroom has the biggest bathroom on its side and the biggest bedroom has the smallest one by its side, with a sink in the bedroom instead of the bathroom -yeah, weird)

- A kitchen, which connects both bedrooms. This one has a normal size fridge, a stove with a kitchen hood, a sink, shelfs, and a microwave. I don't really remember if there was a furnace (or oven). I think we did have one.

- Every cabin has a smoke detector, so be careful when you cook, because it sure will light the alarm.

So, once you enter the cabin, you are in the kitchen.

The only thing that made me didn't like this place that much was the location. It's 20 minutes away from Park City, so there are two trips (with a bus provided by Deer Valley) to Park City in the morning; its final stop is in Snowpark Lodge (there are other in-between). The bus leaves at 6:00 a.m. and the other one at 7:00 - 7:10 a.m. CAREFUL because the bus LEAVES at that time... they won't wait for you, so be punctual.
If you have a day-off and you want to go to the city, you can either take the morning bus or a van that leaves at 12:00 p.m.

Now, when you're done with work, you have to go down to wait for the bus at Snowpark Lodge, where it leaves at 17:30 p.m. so stay tuned to the hour (specially for those who work at Empire or Silver Lake Lodge).

And last but not least about schedule, every day at 18:00 or 18:20 a bus goes to a Walmart supermarket in Heber City, so if you need to do some grocery, go and catch the van!

Where should you take the bus or van?

River's Edge has a thing called Rec (recreation) Center. (The one above the Country Store in the picture), so every bus will leave from that point.

In the "Rec Center" you'll find all the washing machines; they charge you 1,50 or 1,75 USD for the washing and drying service respectively - cheaper than in the other housings; a ping-pong or tennis table, pool table and a soccer table. There are also 2 bathrooms, a T.V. many books and, of course, some armchairs.

The washing machines only work with QUARTERS (a quarter of a dollar = 25 cents).

The Prospector, Park City, UT.

I wish I could have a better picture, but I don't and it's not very easy to find on the internet either. The person who took the picture was sitting in another bed, so there are 3 or 2 (those are the options). These bedrooms have a bathroom inside (the size depends on the size of the bedroom, but it's a nice size). The room comes with a mini fridge, a microwave, a T.V., a couple of chairs, either a bunk bed or two single beds (in case of having only 1 roommate) or a single bed and a bunk bed (total of 3 roommates).

There is a laundry room that costs 2 USD and 1,75 USD (laundry and dry). I repeat: Washing machines only accept QUARTERS (25 cents coin; see the nº10 entry "COIN").

The bus you have to take to get to this place is the Red one. The location is pretty good and a manager also lives in this place, but he doesn't really hear everything, since there are many bedrooms in this place.

Snowshoe Inn, Park City, UT.

Snowshoe is more like prospector than River's Edge. It's a room with a bathroom integrated (in this case the bathroom is on the other side of the wall where the bunk bed is). There are two options as well: 2 single beds (total of 2 roommates) or a bunk bed and a single bed (total of 3 roommates). The room has a microwave that will be your best friend (for making rice, spaghetti, etc), a mini fridge, a TV, a table with some chairs, etc.

There is a laundry room at the bottom floor that costs 2 USD and 1,75 USD (laundry and dry). I repeat: Washing machines only accept QUARTERS (25 cents coin; see the nº10 entry "COIN").

This is the bathroom. I'm sorry I don't have a better picture, but it is what it is.

In this housing lives the manager you emailed to get a room, so the quite hours must be that way, otherwise you'll get in trouble. You can't smoke in the room. The Wi-fi works very good during the day, but not that much when everybody arrives from work.

I had the chance to get a shower in this place, and it was a very good shower haha.

The buses that pass by Snowshoe are these 

Blue, Green, Brown (is NOT red, don't let your eyes be fooled) and Orange.

Some of the closest things from Snowshoe are The Fresh Market, Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR), Rite Aid (Pharmacy), Burger King, The Christian Center, among others.

Supongo que la mayoría de ustedes se va a quedar en alguno de los alojamientos que ofrece Deer Valley.... veamos qué tal son?

River's Edge, Heber City, UT.

Este lugar es increíble para alojar en términos de comodidades. ¿Por qué? porque son muchas cabañas en las que puedes llegar a tener hasta 3 roommates, ahora OJO, que cuando ustedes vayan, esto va a estar cubierto de nieve y no va a ser tan cálido como se ve en las fotos jaja.

En cada cabaña hay:

- 2 piezas con 2 camas cada una (la pieza más grande tiene dos camas de una plaza, una terraza y un armario; la pieza más pequeña tiene una litera o camarote, no tiene terraza, pero tiene closet.)

- 2 baños (el más pequeño está al lado de la pieza más grande y el baño más pequeño está al lado de la pieza más grande, y tiene el lavatorio en la pieza en vez del baño - sí, muy raro).

- Una cocina que conecta a ambos dormitorios. Esta tiene un refrigerador de tamaño normal, una cocina eléctrica con campana, estanterías, y un microondas. En realidad no me acuerdo si había o no horno, pero creo que no. 

- Cada cabaña tiene un detector de humo, así que sean cuidadosos cuando cocinen, porque lo más probable es que les suene la alarma; (un poco de adrenalina no le viene mal a nadie).

Entonces, una vez que entran a la cabaña estarán en la cocina

La única cosa que no me gustó sobre este lugar, es dónde queda ubicado. Está a 20 minutos de Park City, así que hay 2 viajes hacia PC en las mañanas, donde finaliza el recorrido en Snowpark Lodge (hay paradas entre medio). El bus sale River's Edge a las 6:00 a.m. y el otro a las 7:00 - 7:10 (en realidad es un solo bus, pero regresa a River's y vuelve a viajar a PC). Sean CUIDADOSOS, porque el bus SE VA a esa hora... no los van a esperar, así que sean puntuales. 

Si tienen un día libre y quieren ir a la ciudad, pueden tomar alguno de los buses que salen temprano o una van que sale de River's Edge a las 12:00 p.m.

Ahora, cuando salgan del trabajo, tienen que ir a Snowpark Lodge porque a las 17:30 sale el bus que va a River's Edge, así que estén atentos a las horas, sobre todo los que trabajan en Empire y Silver Lake.

Y por último, pero no menos importante en cuanto a los horarios, todos los días a las 18:00 o 18:20 hrs sale una van hacia Heber City para ir a Walmart, así que si necesitan hacer compras de mercadería, ¡no pierdan el bus!

 ¿Dónde puedo tomar el bus o la van?

 River's Edge tiene un lugar que se llama Rec (de "Recreation" = Recreación) Center (centro de recreación)... es el que se ve arriba del "Country Store" en la imagen de abajo), y es ahí desde donde saldrán los buses.

En el Rec Center van a encontrar las máquinas para lavar la ropa, las cuales les van a cobrar 1,50 o 1,75 por el lavado y secado respectivamente; dos baños (1 hombres - 1 mujeres), una mesa de ping-pong, una mesa de pool, una mesa de taca-taca (fútbol de mesa), una mesa de pool, una televisión, libros para leer, mesas para sentarse y algunos sillones.

Las máquinas para lavar funcionan solamente con QUARTERS (un cuarto de dólar = 25 centavos).

The Prospector, Park City, UT.

Me gustaría mucho poder tener una mejor fotografía, pero no la tengo y tampoco es muy fácil encontrar en internet. La persona que tomó la foto estaba sentada en otra cama, así que pueden haber 2 o 3 dependiendo de la cantidad de personas que duerman en ella. Si son de a 3, lo más seguro es que haya una litera o un camarote, además de una cama de una plaza.
Dentro de cada pieza hay un baño que tiene un buen tamaño (salió verso jaja), y el cuarto tiene un refrigerador pequeño, un microondas, un televisor y un par de sillas.

Hay lavandería y cuesta cerca de 2 US y 1,75 US. Vuelvo a advertir: las máquinas solo reciben QUARTERS (monedas de 25 centavos; vean la entrada nº10 "COINS").

El bus que tienen que tomar para llegar a Prospector es el RED. La ubicación de este housing es bastante buena; tienen cerca un subway, 7 eleven (gasolinera que no solo tiene gasolina, sino comida también), supermercados y un hotel en caso que se quieran escapar por una noche jajaja.
Hay un manager que también vive en este lugar, pero son tantas piezas que no escucha mucho lo que pasa cerca.

Snowshoe Inn, Park City, UT.

Snowshoe se parece un poco más a Prospector que a River's Edge. Es un cuarto con un baño integrado (en este caso el baño está al otro lado de la pared donde está la litera o camarote). Hay dos opciones: 2 camas de una plaza, o una litera con una cama de una plaza, como se ve en la foto. La pieza tiene: un microondas, el que se convertirá en su mejor amigo para hacer arroz y tallarines, un refrigerador pequeño, un televisor, cajoneras, una mesa con algunas sillas, etc.

Hay una lavandería en el piso de más abajo (van a sentir el olor a detergente), y cuesta 2 USD y 1,75 USD (lavado - secado). REPITO: Las máquinas para lavar solo aceptan QUARTERS (monedas de 25 centavos; vean la entrada nº10 "COINS").

Este es el baño. Lamento no tener una mejor imagen, pero es lo que hay jajaja

En este housing vive el manager al que le enviaron un mail para tener un cuarto donde quedarse, por lo tanto las horas de silencio se respetan -casi- al pie de la letra. No se puede fumar dentro de los cuartos y el Wifi funciona muy bien durante el día, pero no tanto cuando todos comienzan a llegar de sus trabajos.
Tuve la oportunidad de probar estas duchas y la verdad es que eran bastante buenas, así que aprovéchenlas.

Los buses que pasan por Snowshoe son los siguientes

Blue, Green, Brown (NO es rojo, no se dejen engañar por sus ojos) y Orange.

Algunos de los lugares más cercanos a Snowshoe son: The Fresh Market, Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR), The Christian Center, Rite Aid, Burger King, entre otros.

2. What's a Work & Travel program?

A Work & Travel program is the one that allows you to go and work through the American (in this case) Winter Season, most of times in a Ski Resort. The Visa you get to do this is the J1 Visa.

What are the requirements?
- Be a student of higher education
- Be 29 years or less (negotiable)
- Study in a credited University, Institute or Technical Center
- Be available to travel from November/December through March/April (The Americas) or from June 'til September (Europe).


The J1 Visa lets you work in the US for a maximum period of 4 months from December 1st until April 1st (no before nor longer than that). Now, you can arrive in the US 30 days prior your Visa starts and leave 30 days after it expires.

Now, beware! because the place where you study is going to decide how long your Visa lasts, based on your "start" and "end" of vacations dates, which has to be signed by the Headmaster of your educational establishment.

 So, for example:

Ana asks her Uni until when she can stay and the Uni says "March 15th". So Ana should be back in the country around that date, because once the embassy has that information about Ana's available dates, they won't let her WORK further than March 15th. BUT! guess what. Ana can plan for her flight ticket to depart from the US to her country a couple of weeks after her contract is over (because of what we said earlier).

How does it work?

You contact an agency that offers this Work & Travel program, they'll do an interview to measure your English skills to let you know which kinds of jobs you can apply for once you're at the Job Fair, they'll help you with all the legal things you need to do to work in another country -like getting your Visa-, and puts you in touch with the Sponsor (this is an important entity that verifies everything is going well in your destination)

To avoid fraud, check the US embassy website of your country and there they have all the accredited agencies for you to contact. I personally chose WeUSA; I've been with them for the las 2 seasons and this upcoming one. At least in Chile, they've been really good (everybody has different experiences tho').

What does the agencies do? 

They basically assist you to get a Job Offer and guide you through the process until you leave. They generally have 3 different options:

• Job Fair:

I consider this is the best one if it's your first time doing this. The agency brings the Human Resources (HR) representative from different Ski Resorts and makes a Job Fair. It looks a little like this

these persons will make an interview to "scan" your English skills and personality. They'll tell you the job positions they have available and if you like one of them, then you're in. If you don't like the job positions they offered, you can turn it down.

• Independent

This options is for people that wants to get a job offer by themselves. What the agency does is basically help you with all the legal procedures.

• Returnee

This one is for people that are coming back to the place they worked during their last Work and Travel program.

Is it worthy then? YEAH, definitely. If you want to travel but you can't really stay longer than your "end of vacation" date, then make the arrangements in time so you can let your boss know WHEN you want some days off. Gather with your new friends and talk about it, so all of you can speak with the person in charge to let you grab a car and make a road trip or something.

El programa Work and Travel es uno de los que te permite ir a trabajar durante la temporada de invierno en Estados Unidos, la mayoría del tiempo en un centro de esquí. La Visa con la que vas a viajar es la Visa J1

Cuáles son los requisitos?
- Ser estudiante de educación superior
- Tener 29 años de edad o menos
- Estudiar en una Universidad, Instituto o Centro de formación Técnica que esté acreditado
- Estar disponible para trabaja desde noviembre/diciembre hasta marzo/abril

La Visa J1 te permite trabajar en EEUU por un período máximo de 4 meses desde el 1ero de diciembre hasta el 1ero de abril (no antes ni después de esas fechas). Ahora, puedes llegar al USA 30 días antes que comience tu Visa y puedes irte del país hasta 30 días después que expire.

Ahora, cuidado! porque lo que decide cuánto dura tu Visa para trabajar, es el lugar donde te encuentres estudiando basándose en las fechas de salida y entrada de clases, en un papel que tiene que firmar el jefe de carrera del establecimiento educacional.

Entonces, por ejemplo:
Ana le pregunta a la universidad hasta cuándo puede trabajar en EEUU y esta responde "hasta el 15 de marzo". Entonces Ana debiera volver al país alrededor de esa fecha, porque una vez que la embajada tiene el papel con las fechas disponibles, no le van a permitir TRABAJAR más allá del 15 de marzo. PERO! adivinen... Ana puede sacar su pasaje aéreo de vuelta a su país un par de semanas después de terminado el contrato de trabajo (por lo que se mencionó anteriormente).

Cómo funciona?
Primero contactas a una agencia que ofrezca el programa Work and Travel, te debieran hacer una entrevista en inglés para medir qué tanto sabes y así hacerte saber los tipos de trabajos a los que podrías postular cuando sea la feria de trabajos; también te ayudan a ver todo lo que tenga que ver con asuntos legales en relación a trabajar en EEUU como obtener la Visa, por ejemplo y tener un Sponsor! (los sponsor son una entidad importante que va verificando que todo vaya bien en el país de destino).

Para evitar fraudes, revisa la página web de la embajada de EEUU en tu país, donde tienen una lista con las agencias acreditadas para que los puedas contactar. Yo elegí WeUSA y he estado con ellos hace dos años, además del que viene ahora. Al menos en Chile, la agencia funciona bien (aunque pueden haber otras experiencias también). 

Qué hacen las agencias?
Te ayudan para obtener una oferta de trabajo y te guían durante el proceso legal completo hasta que te vas. Generalmente, las agencias ofrecen 3 opciones:

• Job Fair:

Creo que esta es la mejor opción si es tu primera vez haciendo este programa. La agencia trae a los representantes de Recursos Humanos (HR) de diferentes centros de esquí y hace una Feria Laboral (Job Fair). Es un poco así


Estas personas te harán una entrevista simple para "escanear" qué tanto inglés sabes y qué personalidad tienes. Te van a decir las posiciones de trabajos que tienen disponibles y si te gusta alguna, la aceptas; si no, la rechazas.

• Independent

Esta es la opción para las personas que quieren obtener una oferta de trabajo por sus propios medios. Lo que la agencia hace es ayudarte a con los trámites legales y es el medio de contacto con el Sponsor. 

• Returnee

Esta es para la gente que ya ha hecho un programa Work and Travel y regresará al mismo lugar de trabajo.

Vale la pena ir? SÍ, definitivamente. Si quieres viajar pero no te puedes quedar mucho más tiempo del que te deja tu lugar de estudios, entonces intenta hablar con tu jefe (una vez que estés instalad@ en EEUU) para que te de ciertas fechas libres y así puedas viajar mientras estés contratad@.
